Your actual rating comes from VA after its review. Questions? VA Benefits Hotline: 800-827-1000 (TTY: 711).
1. Your individual ratings
Add each rated condition. If a condition affects an arm or leg, choose which one. That's how the bilateral factor (38 CFR § 4.26) is applied.
2. Your dependents (changes pay at 30% and up)
3. Result
Add at least one rating above.
How this is calculated
- Combined rating (38 CFR § 4.25). VA doesn't add ratings. Each rating applies to the "efficiency" left over after the more severe ones. Ratings are combined highest first, and the total is rounded to the nearest 10 only once, at the end. Values ending in 5 round up.
- Bilateral factor (38 CFR § 4.26). If both arms or both legs have a compensable rating, those ratings are combined first, then 10% of that value is added. The result is treated as one rating. If leaving a rating out of the bilateral calculation would give you a higher result, that's used instead (§ 4.26(d)).
- Monthly pay. Taken from VA.gov's rate tables effective December 1, 2025, using VA.gov's own method: basic rate, plus each additional child, plus Aid and Attendance.
Not modeled: paired skeletal muscles under § 4.26, Special Monthly Compensation (SMC), TDIU, and helpless-child rates. Talk to VA or an accredited representative about these.
